April 10, 2015: Weekly Disney News Roundup

*  Disney bans Selfie Sticks from all park attractions, but not from the parks themselves.

*  Tickets are on sale for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom.

*  The Matterhorn bobsled in Disneyland will have new Abominable Snowman special effects when it re-opens in May

*  When Disneyland’s Peter Pan’s Flight re-opens in May, it will have new special effects including a re-imagining of the nursery scene.

*  Reservations can now be made for “Feel the Force” premiere packages during Star Wars Weekends at WDW’s Hollywood Studios.  These include dining options and special viewing of events.

*  A woman was denied entry into Magic Kingdom this week for trying to bring in her pet,…a baby Bengal tiger.

*  Tickets for “Night of Joy,” a Christian music festival at Magic Kingdom on September 11 and 12 have gone sale.  Tickets purchased in advance are much reduced from same day prices.  The acts for this year are (Sept. 11) TobyMac, MercyMe, Jeremy Camp, Colton Dixon, Big Daddy Weave, Francesca Battistelli, Rend Collective, I Am They, Josh Wilson (Sept.12) Skillet, Lecrae, For King & Country, Mandisa, Matt Maher, Jamie Grace, 7eventhTime Down, and Veridia.

*  The DVC (Disney Vacation Club) website will be down on April 14 for scheduled maintenance.

*  Mickey Mouse and friends will star in “Mickey and the Roadster Racers,” an animated series premiering on Disney Jr. in 2017.

*  “Dances with the Stars” will be Disney themed on April 13.

*  Marvel’s “Daredevil” premieres on Netflix today with promising reviews.

*  Marvel “Avengers:  Age of Ultron” will not have the expected post-credit sequence.  Josh Whedon says he skipped the scene because he could not top the schwarma scene for the first Avengers movie.  Fear not, it will have a mid-credit sequence.

*  A live-action “Pinocchio” is in the works.  When Disney has made live-action remakes of all of its animated classics, it will then proceed with sock puppet remakes which it believes are the next big thing.  (NOT REALLY)

*  “Duck Tales:  Remastered,” by Disney Interactive is now available.

The baby rhino at Disney’s Animal Kingdom has been named Kiama by popular vote. Her park debut has yet to be announced.
A giant sand sculpture has been added in front of Animal Kingdom to promote the upcoming “Monkey Kingdom” movie.
Rumor that a new attraction (not “Frozen” in Norway) is coming to Epcot in 2016. Check out the full story at wdwnt.com.
Blizzard Beach waterpark at WDW marks its 20th anniversary.
DVC’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows has opened.
A new construction permit suggests change coming to Wilderness Lodge; likely major renovation and conversion of hotel rooms to DVC timeshare villas.

March 27, 2015: Weekly Disney News Roundup

* “Tomorrowland” sneak preview will be starting in mid-April at California Disneyland in the Tomorrowland Theater and at WDW Epcot in the Imagination Pavilion (home of Captain Eo). The preview will last 10-15 minutes. “Tomorrowland” opens on May 22.
* Skippers Cantina, a Jungle Cruise themed restaurant, is coming to the Magic Kingdom.
* All exhibits in Innoventions West at Epcot will close for good on April 30. This includes Where’s the Fire?, Great Piggybank Adventure, and IBM Think. It is unknown what the plans for the area are.
* The Dream House in Epcot’s Innoventions East is set to close, too.
* Innoventions in Disneyland California is set to close at the end of March. It is rumored that Star Wars attraction(s) will take its place.
* Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Animal Kingdom Lodge were granted official accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
* Art in the Garden will be at the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival from March 27 – 29 featuring art exhibits along the World Showcase.
* An exhibit of concept art from the upcoming Pixar movie “inside Out” has opened at Disney Hollywood Studios in the Production Gallery of the Magic of Disney Animation.
* Marvel “Super Heroes Headquarters” store will open in May at Disney Springs (Downtown Disney) in Florida.
* Registration for Avengers Super Heroes 1/2 Marathon at Disneyland California opens on April 7.
* DVC Polynesian Villas and Bungalows open on April 1.
* Disney Cruise Line announced its first British Isles itinerary. Leaving from Dover, England on 6/5/16, the 12 night cruise will make stops in England, Ireland, Scotland and France. From our calling, it appears that it has already sold out and there is a waiting list.
* Disney bans smoking in all of its films rated PG-13 or below.
* Disney’s Aladdin celebrated its first anniversary on Broadway on March 20.

* Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes are adding Loki as a playable character.

*Editorial:  We love The Great Piggy Bank Adventure, Disney Dream House, and Where’s the Fire and will miss them.  Epcot needs more attractions.  I hope that there are plans for replacements, better than Habit Heroes, or an entirely new attraction.

* Yesterday, 3/19/15, Magic Kingdom guests were treated to two flyovers and aerial displays over Cinderella Castle by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. Check out the “Disney Parks Blog” for pictures and video.
* Be Our Guest Restaurant in Magic Kingdom’s New Fantasyland will begin testing a prix-fixe breakfast from 8-10 a.m. starting today and running through June 18th.
* Smokejumpers Grill at Disney’s California Adventure Grizzly Peak Airfield opens today.
* Reservations can be made beginning today for “Wishes Firework Dessert Party” at the Magic Kingdom. Tomorrowland Terrace will be home of this experience.
* “For the First Time in Forever” A Frozen Sing-Along celebration is moving to Hollywood Studios Superstar Television Theater, formerly home of the American Idol Experience. The theater will now be called the Hyperion Theater.
* Disney Egg-stravaganza, a scavenger hunt for Disney themed Easter eggs, will run from March 27th through April 5th, at Disneyland in California and Epcot in Florida.
* MagicBands are set to replace parking passes at WDW resort hotels. Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resort and Disney’s Beach Club Villas (DVC) will be the first to undergo the change.
* Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort East Pool will soon close for 8-10 months for refurbishment.
* Registration for Disney’s Wine & Dine Half Marathon filled in about an hour on March 17. (We missed out.)
* A new Muppets Short Series is coming to Disney Jr.
* Disney Channel plans a biopic of Mo’ne Davis, the 13 year old girl who last year became the first girl to pitch a shut out in the Little League World Series: “Throw Like Mo.”
* “Cinderella” opened strong as the top grossing movie for last weekend.

March 13, 2015: Weekly Disney News Roundup

* Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure will be open for 24 hours on May 22, starting at 6 a.m., celebrating the “Diamond Anniversary.”
* Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World will be open for 24 hours also on May 22, starting at 6 a.m. for Disney’s “Coolest Summer Ever” celebration, hosted by Olaf.
* Aloha Isle (and Dole Whips) has traded places with Sunshine Tree Terrace in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom.
* Smokejumpers Grill will open on March 20, premiering the first phase of openings of Grizzly Peak Airfield at Disney’s California Adventure.
* Doc McStuffins will be making regular appearances this summer in the Animation Courtyard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
* Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be renamed. When the change will occur or what the new name will be is yet to be announced.
* Registration for Disney’s Wine & Dine Half Marathon on November 7, opens on 3/17/15. It will fill up quickly.
* Disney is set to publish “Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” a teen book series, in the fall of 2015.
* Tim Burton will direct the live-action version of “Dumbo.”
* Disney’s live-action “Cinderella” opens today, scoring an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes.
* Disney announces “Frozen 2” is in development.
* “Tron 3” is set to start filming.
* “Star Wars: Episode VIII” will open in theaters on 5/26/17.

* The 2015 Epcot Flower & Garden Festival has opened.
* Soarin’ at Epcot and Toy Story Mania! at Hollywood Studios are both set to undergo expansion aimed at decreasing wait times. Both should be completed by late 2016.
* Soarin’ at Epcot will soon have its screens and projection systems upgraded to improve the visual experience.
* Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid ride in New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom has re-opened after renovation with several updates.
* Fireworks caused a fire near the “It’s a Small World” attraction at Disneyland this week. No one was injured and there was no damage to the ride.
* Disney Egg-stravaganza, a scavenger hunt for Disney character themed Easter eggs, will run from March 27th through April 5th at Disneyland in California and at Epcot in Florida.
* Neil Patrick Harris and Mickey Mouse will co-host the new “World of Color – Celebration” show for Disneyland’s Diamond 60th anniversary celebration, opening on May 22nd.
* Planet Hollywood restaurant at WDW Downtown Disney is set to undergo renovations to fit into the Disney Springs turn-of-the-century theme.
* Disney’s Polynesian Villas and Bungalows open on April 1st.
* Renovations to the Polynesian resort’s main pool, the Lava Pool, is expected to be completed and opened by the April 1st opening of the DVC Villas and Bungalows.
* DVC members are invited to a complementary, advanced screening of Disney’s “Cinderella” on Saturday, March 7th at 3p.m. at the AMC Downtown Disney 24 theaters. RSVP is required. “Cinderella” officially opens in the US on March 13th.
* DVC members can save on tickets to “La Nouba” by Cirque du Soleil at WDW Downtown Disney from now through March 28th. Discounts vary from 18 – 36%, depending on category and adult/child ticket purchases. Members can purchase for themselves and up to 5 guests.
* Registration for the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon on 11/7/15, opens on March 17th.
* The new Disney Side App, “Show Your Disney Side” is now available for free on the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPod touch at http://Disneysideapp.com. It allows you to transform your image into your favorite characters from park attractions and experiences.

February 27: Weekly Disney News Roundup

*  Ticket prices increase at Disney resorts.  A 1 day, single adult ticket to Magic Kingdom is now $105 plus tax.  Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom tickets are now $97.  Disneyland and California Adventure cost $99.  Adding the park-hopper option is now $56. *  Pirates of the Caribbean at Magic Kingdom will close through the summer due to safety concerns. *  The Main St. Plaza Gardens West has opened in the Magic Kingdom.  The new area has a fountain, landscaping, and an astroturf lawn.  It will be used as an area to view fireworks using Fast Pass Plus reservations. *  Epcot’s Flower and Garden Festival begins next week. *  Dapper Days, where you dress your best and enjoy a day at the parks with other spiffy people are here:  Disneyland on Sunday March 1st and Magic Kingdom on Saturday March 14th. *  New Village Causeway has opened at Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World. *  ESPN’s “Mike and Mike” will be recording their 15th anniversary show at Downtown Disney at WDW on March 6th from 6 – 10 a.m. *  The Atlanta Braves begin Spring training at ESPNs Wide World of Sports complex. *  DVC Polynesian Villas and Bungalows 7-month reservations opened 2/25/15. *  Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC opens at Downtown Disney at WDW. *  The new “Kitchen Magic with Mickey” Disney Cookbook has gone on sale at Disney Parks featuring 100 favorite recipes from the parks, resorts, and Disney Cruise Line. *  The Disney Fantasy was named Best Large Cruise Ship for the second straight year by Cruise Critics 2014 Cruise Choice Awards.  It also took best in Large Ship Cabins, Best Dining and Best Family Ship. *  The Disney Wonder won Best Midsize Ship. *  The Disney Dream was named Best Overall Cruise Ship in Large Category. *  Disney’s “Big Hero 6” won Best Animated Feature Film at the Oscars. *  Disney’s “Feast” won Best Animated Short Film at the Oscars. *  Ducktails will return to TV with a new series in 2017 on Disney XD.

February 20, 2015: Disney News Roundup

* Disney Princess Half Marathon is this weekend on 2/22/15.  A live stream will be available starting at 5 a.m. on runDisney and Disney Parks Blog.  The race passes through both Magic Kingdom and Epcot.

*  Epcot is set to introduce “Streetmospheres” actors to the Japan pavilion celebrating Tokyo’s Harajuku neighborhood where young adults wear unique fashions.

*  More details of Disneyland’s 60th anniversary festivities have been released.

–  Sleeping Beauty Castle and Carthay Circle Theater will have sparkling , diamond makeovers.

–  A new Disneyland fireworks show, “Disneyland Forever” will combine fireworks with the largest installation of mapping technology at any Disney Park.

–  Disneyland “Paint the Night Parade,”  like at Hong Kong Disneyland, will premiere featuring 1.5 million LED lights, with Disney and Pixar characters.

–  At Disney’s California Adventure starting on May 22, a special World of Color, called Celebrating the Wonderful World of Walt Disney” will premiere.

*  Hong Kong Disneyland’s phase 2 will soon be started and is estimated to be completed in 2020.

*  Sanuk, a division of Decker’s brand, has opened at Downtown Disney at WDW.

*  DVC properties, Disney’s Beach Club Villas and Disney’s Boardwalk Villas will undergo refurbishments and improvements this year.

*  Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff from “Frozen” will join passengers from Disney Cruise Line’s Magic for on-shore excursions to Alesund, Norway.

*  “McFarland USA,” the true story from Disney movies  of a 1987 high school cross country team opens today.  It rates 77% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

*  “Pirates of the Caribbean:  Dead Men Tell No Tales” begins production.

February 13, 2015: Disney News Roundup

*  The Walt Disney World Speedway with the Richard Petty Driving Experience is set to close and be demolished to open space for improved traffic and parking patterns.

*  The newest Starbucks at WDW, the Trolley Car Cafe’, has opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

*  “A Cooking Safari with Mickey:  Recipes from Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge” will go on sale this spring at Animal Kingdom.

*  “Luigi’s Flying Tires” attraction in Cars Land at Disney’s California Adventure will close this month and will be replaced with a Dancing Cars Ride.

*  Disney Cruise Line has announced Star Wars Days on select cruises from January through April 2016.

*  Spiderman is now officially part of the Disney/Marvel universe.  Disney and Marvel will co-produce the next Spiderman movie with Sony, set to be released in July 2017.

*  “Frozen” wins Grammy awards for  Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media and Best Song Writing for Visual Media “Let It Go.”

*  Disney’s new app., Miles from Tomorrowland:  Missions, a game based on the Disney Jr. series  “Miles from Tomorrowland” is now available.

1.  WDW Epcot Starbucks Mug pulled due to monorail with a purple strip which is associated with a tragic 2009 crash.

2.  Disneyland’s 60th anniversary, Diamond Celebration begins on May 23rd.

3.  The Four Season Orlando at WDW is named best hotel in Orlando.

4.  WDW monorail routes are being changed for parts of February and March.  From 11 a.m – 7 p.m on 2/3-5, 2/9-12, 2/23-26, and 3/2-5 the routes will be changed as follows:  monorail on resort beam stops will be Magic Kingdom, Polynesian Resort, and Grand Floridian Resort; monorail on express beam stops will be Magic Kingdom, Transportation and Ticketing Center, and Contemporary Resort.

5.  Disney’s “Night of Joy 2015,” on September, 11 and 12, performers have been announced:  MercyMe, For King & Country, Francesca Battistelli, Lecree, TobyMac, Skillet, Jeremy Camp, Seventh Time Down, I Am They, and Veridia.

6.  Disney is set to increase ticket prices in February.

7.   Emma Watson (aka Hermione Granger of Harry Potter) will star in “Beauty and the Beast.”

8.  Hollywood Tower Hotel merchandise arrive at parks on February 13th.

9.  Disney Cruise Line’s “Magic” rescues 5 Cuban nationals sailing in a raft.

10. Disneyland Half-Marathon Weekend (9/4 – 9/6) registration opens on 2/10/15.
